With respect to the crash of MH17:
1. Smart phone apps exist that can identify commercial flights overhead. Just point the phone toward the sky and the screen displays the airline,
flight number, origin and destination. So they either knew, or could have known that NH17 was a passenger jet.
2. The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder will provide more information about the catastrophic event.
3. Explosions, like weapons, have acoustic signatures, and can help identify the exact cause and nature of the catastrophic event
4. If a missile hit the plane the last altitude data would indicate final data at time of impact.
5. If on the other hand the aircraft suffered a malfunction the recorders would continue to operate until ground impact.
6. The voices of the crew in the final moments of the recording will be important
7. Radar data will reveal the time, altitude, heading and velocity of the aircraft when last observed by radar.
8. In this case we do not have to depend on underwater pingers. The answers should come faster
